What are Wedding Dress Alterations, and
Why Would my Beautiful Wedding Gown Need Them?
As soon as you start trying on wedding gowns, you'll notice that they never fit as well as the picture shows. The most common wedding dress alterations are the waist size and length. However, many other alterations can take your dress from pretty to fabulous. The proper alterations will make your dress more comfortable, so you can move freely and dance without tripping. Alterations can also enhance a gown's beauty exponentially.
"Even when a dress fits reasonably well, we can take it to the next level. We can make it more flattering for your body type, height, and bust size," explains Olga. "The last thing you need during your event is to worry about straps riding down your shoulder or tripping on the gown's train. We can fix those issues and do much more with alterations."
What happens at the fitting appointment?
If you have been shopping around for a wedding dress, you know even the dream dress doesn't look perfect when trying it. The reason is most designers create dresses for mass production using standard sizes. So, practically, all store-bought dresses will require alterations for a flawless fit.
A bridal fitting is an appointment with an alteration expert. They will take measurements of your body. You'll also try on the dress to see how it fits, and they will recommend what needs to be done.
Some alterations are the result of traditions or personal tastes. For example, we can make a cleavage more modest by adding a modesty panel on the front. We can also remove the sleeves for a bride that wishes to show off her arms. Olga will advise on the alterations' possibilities, costs, and timeframes.
Most studios require three fittings for wedding dress alterations to be ready. At Olga Godoy, brides usually have two fittings -an initial appointment and a second one when you can pick up the dress. Any final details can generally get fixed during the second session while you wait. To learn more about the process, visit our FAQ page.
What are the most requested bridal alterations?
HEMMING – Hemming is the most requested dress alteration and one of the hardest to pull out. The right skirt length will allow you to move and dance freely. It also prevents tripping and stepping on the dress. An alterations expert will maintain the original dress design so that the alteration is imperceptible. We may need to remove ornaments and lace before cutting the fabric to the desired length and then sew them back.
Olga's Tip Bring the shoes you'll wear on your wedding day so the hem can be adjusted accordingly. Be sure to hire an expert to hem your wedding dress, as the job is not as simple as it may seem. |
BUST – At Olga Godoy, we can add cups, remove cups, or replace the cups to achieve the look you want.
STRAPS – We can remove the bridal gown straps or, on the contrary, create straps for a strapless dress. We can also replace the straps or embellish them with decorations.
SLEEVES – With this alteration, we can create sleeves for a sleeveless dress or remove the ones your dress came with.
BUSTLE – Bridal gowns don't always come with a bustle. The bustle is an accessory that will allow you to lift the tail of your dress when dancing or walking. We recommend two types of bustles at Olga Godoy: the American or the French. We'll recommend the best bustle style depending on your dress's style.
IRONING – Don't wait until the last minute to figure out how to get the wrinkles out of your dress. Ask about our ironing service to ensure the dress looks its best on your special day –and so do you!
